CLEVELAND (92.3 The Fan) – A ring represents never-ending unity. A bond. Love. Friendship. Loyalty.
The Cleveland Cavaliers’ 2016 NBA championship rings are no different.
Here are some fun facts and details about the design of the 2016 NBA championship rings courtesy of the Cavaliers.
The ring is encrusted with over 400 diamonds plus a one-carat diamond that adorns the top of the Larry O’Brien Trophy that interlocks with the Cavs’ ‘C’ logo, which is surrounded with diamonds on the head of the ring. The black accent outlining the ‘C’ represents the turning point in the championship run when the Cavs won 3 straight games after choosing to wear their black-sleeved uniforms for Games 5 and 7. Fans wore black tee shirts for Game 6 because of a league rule that calls for light uniforms for home games during the playoffs.
In the background of the interlocking logo are 100 diamonds that represent the number of Cavaliers playoff victories in the team’s history to win a championship. Cascading the right and left edges are 46 diamonds (23 per side) which represent the 46 years that the Cavs organization has been in existence (1970-2016).
The words “World” and “Champions” are at the top and bottom of the crown outlined with gold and filled with 216 diamonds representing Cleveland’s area code. The rim of the crown features the numbers of every player in sequential order engraved in 14K yellow gold with a diamond in between.
The left shoulder features the players’ number engraved in a gold banner and filled with diamonds that hangs over a white gold engraving of the landmark buildings of downtown Cleveland – the Terminal Tower, Key Tower, 200 Public Square, Carl B. Stokes Federal Courthouse and Quicken Loans Arena as well as the Detroit-Superior bridge representing the connectivity of the team to the city. At the bottom of the band is a gold text engraving of “CLE” and right above it and just below the bridge is ‘LII’ – the roman numeral for 52 – signifying the 52-year championship drought which is now in the past or “under the bridge.”
The right shoulder features the players’ last name engraved in gold that runs down the side and engraved in white gold is “2016” that includes the NBA logo substituting for the 0 and a silhouette of the state of Ohio which is encrusted with 11 diamonds to signify the number of years the franchise has been under the ownership of Dan Gilbert’s ownership group.
The underside of the band boasts a line of seven stones to represent the seven games of the 2016 Finals – 3 white diamonds for the Warriors’ wins while 4 wine-colored garnets represent the Cavaliers’ victories and symbolize the first time in NBA history a team overcame a 3-1 series deficit to win the title.
