Major League Baseball is back. On Thursday, MLB and the MLB Players' Association struck a new collective bargaining agreement that ends the owner-initiated locked out at 99 days. It is the second-longest work stoppage in baseball history behind the 1994-95 players' strike (232 days).
A 162-game season will be played in 2022, though it will begin a week later than usual. The games that are missed will be made up later in the season as part of doubleheaders, off-days, etc. Here's a look at MLB's new post-lockout calendar:
March 11: Players can begin reporting to spring training as soon as Friday. Many players live in the area or have been working out near their team's spring training complex in anticipation of an agreement, so they can report right away. Others are working out at separate facilities and could be a few days behind.
March 13: This is the mandatory reporting day for spring training. Players can begin reporting to camp Friday but they have to be there by Sunday.
March 17-18: Spring training games tentatively scheduled to begin. Teams will hold about a week's worth of workouts before jumping in Cactus League and Grapefruit League games. Because clubs will want to be careful with their players during this unusual rushed camp, expect to see a lot of minor leaguers early on in exhibition games, particularly on the mound. Teams are going to protect their players.
April 7: Opening Day. MLB and the MLBPA will pick up the existing schedule rather than build a new one, and there are only eight games on the schedule that day. Here is the April 7 schedule (times to be announced):
- White Sox at Royals
- Red Sox at Yankees
- Mariners at Twins
- Pirates at Cardinals
- Mets at Nationals
- Reds at Braves
- Brewers at Cubs
- Astros at Angels
- Padres at Diamondbacks
That White Sox vs. Royals game was originally going to be the final game of a three-game series. In all likelihood that game will be postponed and made up at a later date, and the two clubs will begin their seasons with a fresh new series on April 8. Teams not listed have a scheduled off-day April 7 and begin a new series April 8. Here is the April 8 schedule:
- White Sox at Tigers (new series)
- Brewers at Cubs
- Athletics at Phillies (new series)
- Orioles at Rays (new series)
- Dodgers at Rockies (new series)
- Marlins at Giants (new series)
- Mets at Nationals
- Rangers at Blue Jays (new series)
- Reds at Braves
- Guardians at Royals (new series)
- Astros at Angels
- Padres at Diamondbacks
The Yankees vs. Red Sox, Mariners vs. Twins, and Pirates vs. Cardinals series that begin April 7 have an off-day April 8. That is the customary "off-day after Opening Day in case Opening Day gets rained out" off-day. Those series resume April 9, the first day on the schedule every team will be in action.
